Below is a lightly edited transcript of the interview with Scanlon.
- WRAL TechWire (TW): Can you share project updates?
Kevin Scanlon (Scanlon): Large Space, Home Q1 2023, 120 Mosaic Boulevard, Suite 120, Pittsboro, NC 27312.
Our goal was to show the community what we were up to before moving into a permanent space through this activation.
- TW: What about demand?
Scanlon: I can report that there has been a lot of interest in collaboration workspaces from neighbors in Chatham County over the past few weeks.
In the middle space, part-time memberships, meeting spaces, and drop-in options (one-day and one-week passes) are the most interesting. There is also strong interest in private offices with larger spaces due to open in early Q1 2023.
- TW: How big is the space?
Scanlon: 79° West: Launch Pod is about 3,000 square feet, while the larger innovation hub will be closer to 20,000 square feet. Again, that collaboration workspace will be available early Q1 2023.
- TW: What services do you offer?
Scanlon: We have an amazing team that supports our members, colleagues and guests every day and provides top notch amenities. But I think UNC-Chapel Hill’s innovation programming partnership with Innovate Carolina will be an important catalyst for the growth of people and companies. They provide, among other resources, access to leading entrepreneurial voices and research coming out of the university, pitch support, and connection to capital.
- TW: Do you have programs focused on women entrepreneurs, minority-owned businesses, veteran-owned businesses?
Scanlon: We actively reach out to local women, minority and veteran-owned businesses to listen to their needs and make sure we are aware of the innovation-driven community we are creating at 79° West. I hope to receive it.
- TW: How did you get support? From local, state, and/or federal governments? From corporations? From a grant program?
Scanlon: So far, we have not received any financial support from government agencies or companies. However, I am very grateful for the relationship support and connections made by my many friends in the Chatham County area.
- TW: Who are the founders and what is their philosophy about helping startups and small/startups grow?
Scanlon: Owner of 79°West Lee Moore Capital Company along with a few other investors. One of his central figures in the investor group is Kirk Bradley. Kirk is a serial entrepreneur and investor with deep ties to the state of North Carolina. He has strategically placed his 79° West Innovation Hub at the heart of large corporations. mosaic development Because we believe in the “maker culture” of Chatham County.
